The Basics

There is a small fee to enter the Wadi Rum protected area. Most visitors arrive either on a tour or to stay in one of the desert camps, which range from basic to luxurious. It is also possible to hire a Bedouin 4WD driver directly on arrival.

Wadi Rum is an essential stop on most multi-day Jordan tours, some of which include a night under the desert stars. At around four hours from Amman, it’s a challenging day trip, and better approached from Aqaba—although many would argue that without a night in the desert you’re missing out. Most Wadi Rum tours explore by 4WD, although some include a short camel ride, and longer camel safaris are also possible. Adventure activities include rock climbing and sandboarding.

Highly recommended
A trip recommended for everyone on a short "city break" to Jordan. You get to see all the most important landmarks in a comfortably paced 2-day trip. Everything well organised, with good communication prior to start of and during the trip. Plus the guide, Qutaibah, was very friendly and understanding, with all the answers needed!

2-Day Tour: Petra, Wadi Rum, and Dead Sea from Amman
A great tour. All must see, all Covid friendly activities. Well organized and fully packed with the best of Jordan. Our driver/guide was great, the car was clean, the locations were safe, and the schedule was flexible if need be. My review says I was solo but in reality I was linked up with another solo traveler. Having that companion certainly enhanced my experience but I wouldn't let it stop you if you get the chance and have to travel it alone. Its an experience of a lifetime!

3-Day Private Tour from Amman: Petra, Wadi Rum, Dana, Aqaba, and Dead Sea
Ahmad from Jordan Private Tours was the most professional and kind tour guide I’ve ever had and I’ve had many. He answered any questions I had and provided information about Jordan and it’s history, always ensuring I understood and asking if I was still interested in hearing more. His English is excellent and he’s very accommodating. I never felt rushed or like I had missed out. 10/10! Unforgettable experience with this company and in Jordan!

Ahmed was great. We were only there for a short time due to flight timings but he rearranged the tour to fit everything in for us. He was very accomodating to our needs and nothing was too much of a hassle for him

Booking was easy. I spoke with them on what’s app and they answered all of my questions, even what to wear. They were very accommodating. My driver and guide was Sadeq. He was wonderful. He is very knowledgeable about the area and always willing to wait for you while you view various excursions and will take photos. I had a great time

Half-Day Desert Tours | Wadi Rum Desert
I almost didn't book this tour: I was apprehensive about going into the desert in the summer, and even after I decided on that, I wasn't sure about camping. Would it be too much? We started with the one hour camel ride and then did the half-day jeep tour. This was after a four hour bus ride to get to Aqaba from Amman, and then a taxi out to Wadi Rum. (Desert Eyes arranged that for us too.) It was a long day, but worked out perfectly. We kept on saying, "we're going to sleep well tonight;" then the stars were so amazing it was tough to go to bed! We saw a few other groups while we were out in the 4x4, but my friend and I were the only two people at camp. It was a great first post-COVID excursion, and I'm glad I chose this one instead of the glamping. I suppose I do want to sleep in a bubble someday, but I liked the accommodations here (tiny cabin for two, exterior bathroom with plumbing/showers) and it was 25% of the bubble/glamping price. I'm so glad we went for this tour! I'd say it's one of the top tours I've done in my life...and I've been to 40+ countries. The scenery is breathtaking, the food was incredible, our guide was fantastic, so many sights to see, and the stars...wow. One night wasn't enough, really. I would go back in an instant, and I would come back to Jordan specifically for this.

2-Day Tour: Petra, Wadi Rum, and Dead Sea from Amman
Excellent 2 day trip...which exceeded all expectations! Petra was mercifully empty due to the pandemic, incredibly beautiful, skip the horses and camels go straight to the donkeys! Wadi Rum was simply jaw dropping, so magnificent there are simply no words! Beduoin jeeps were so much fun, the luxury tents were very comfortable. The staff at Alladin's Camp gets 5 stars for effort! The Dead Sea visit meant an additional charge to use the hotels amenities ( you need to shower immediatley) You cannot swim forward, it just flips you onto your back...bizarre experience, do not get the water in your eyes...I did..it felt like acid::( We travelled in a private car ...we were expecting "an English speaking driver" but instead we got "Omar Asha" from We Guide Travels. A passionate Jordanian that made our trip so memorable...he truly went above and beyond in every way. This trip involves many hours in the car, he made countless stops to show us Jordan's hidden gems. He translated for us, took photos for us, kept us on tract but above all else made us feel safe with his driving. He was respectful, never on his phone...(after some white knuckle, vomit induced taxi drives through Amman) we felt completly at ease with him. Please ask for him if you book this trip....we are indebted to him for his kindness and expertise that made it a true "Feast for the Eyes trip!"

Day Tour to Petra & Wadi Rum from Amman
So Petra is absolutely amazing. You need more time to see everything, as we didn't get to the Monastery because that would have taken a few more hours honestly, which you just don't have. The guide was great for this, he explains everything and it's just really cool to see. Then Wadi Rum is super cool. So much to see here and some great places to visit. There is a sand dune that you can climb up barefoot which is crazy. The sand is soft, but it takes a little time. The jeep ride is great for this, certainly sit in the front...yes even if you are with your significant other. I've been all over the world and my guide for Wadi Rum, Yahea, is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. I think we'd be best friends if he lived in the USA near me. This guy brought me to a place not on the tour (little bridge) because I asked him about it. He then took a selfie with my wife and I to when we asked. He was awesome. You have to get him for the Wadi Rum part of your tour. It's a long day....like....long, but so completely worth it. I'd try to find a way to book an overnight at wadi rum with him if you can, we ran out of time but I'll be doing that if I go back. Our driver was a really good guy who went the extra mile for us, Muhammad. Only gripe at all to keep it from getting 5 is at Petra the horse people are super rude....like....I was shocked how unappreciative they were. The man that had us ride the donkey was really nice (that's 100% worth it on the way back from Petra) we paid and tipped him, but the men with the horses suck....and we weren't warned....avoid them at all cost. My wife almost got hurt and both trainers were really disrespectful. I felt bad for the horses if that's how these idiots act. Anyways, 100% should do this tour because it truly is amazing...I'd do it again.

Things to Know Before You Go

How to Get There

Deep in the south of Jordan, Wadi Rum is about 45 minutes’ drive from Aqaba; guides and camps can generally arrange seats on the minibuses that run the route most of the year. Given that self-driving inside the protected area is only possible in a 4WD with a professional driver to supervise, many will find it easier simply to arrange a Wadi Rum tour that includes round-trip door-to-door transport.

When to Get There

Like other deserts, Wadi Rum can be surprisingly cold on a winter’s night and searingly hot at the height of summer. The tourist peak seasons of spring and fall (mid-March to mid-May and mid-September to mid-November) are also the most convenient times to visit. It’s worth spending the night to appreciate the stillness of the desert and the brilliance of the stars.

Wadi Rum on Film

FromLawrence of Arabia toThe Martian, Wadi Rum’s startling colors have long made it a popular film location. The area regularly stands in for Mars, and indeed for other planets: It serves as a setting forRogue One: A Star Wars Story. One desert camp, inspired byThe Martian, features domes in the style of the one Matt Damon’s character lived in during the movie.
