Atlas Mountains

Marrakech, Morocco

The Basics

The vast mountain range is split into three main regions: the centrally located High Atlas, the Middle Atlas to the north, and the remote Anti Atlas, tucked away in the south. Easily reached from Marrakech, the High Atlas range draws many visitors, with hotels clustered around popular spots like the picturesque Ourika Valley, Ouirgane, and Imlil. It’s also home to the 13,671-foot (4,167-meter) Mount Toubkal, Morocco’s highest peak. For many, a stay in the High Atlas Mountains is a pit stop en route to Ouarzazate, the launch pad for camping tours and desert camel treks. Experience the grandeur of the Atlas Mountains on a day trip from Marrakech, which might include activities such as quad biking, hot air ballooning, or a visit to a Berber village.

Totally worth the experience
This tour was amazing! Booked last minute but was contacted by the organizers and picked up from the designated spot. You'll get to experience lots of thing in one day. From mountains, to waterfalls, to desert, to delicious breakfast and food. Totally worth the money. It's not as 'guided' as other tours but that's because you're mostly admiring the settings around you and for that no explanation is needed. Highly recommend. Thank you

Atlas Mountains & 5 Valleys Day Tour from Marrakech - All inclusive -
It was an excellent trip well worth the money. Abdel did a superb job telling us a lot about the area, the history and current situation in Morocco, thus it was quite insightful and interesting. The area, the high Atlas mountains are just beautiful, the lunch beak was great with a truly fantastic targine and sides. Everything including the ride was quite professional and pleasant. Thanks much.

Desert Agafay and Atlas Mountains & Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
We had a great trip! Said was a fantastic tour guide full of information about the Atlas Mountains. The camel ride was lots of fun and the hike through Imlil to the waterfall was beautiful. We would definitely recommend the tour to anyone coming to Marrakech. The bus was very comfortable, the lunch was delicious and well priced. I hope our tour money will help continue to develop the valley area of Morocco. Thanks Said!

Desert Agafay & Atlas Mountains & Waterfalls, Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
This was by far one of the best things we did. Great price, Potatoes was a fun guide. Have so much fun. It is a long day, be prepared to walk on uneven surfaces . You DO go in the mountains so if you get car sick, bring Dramamine for the switchbacks. Great value and a memorable day!

Atlas Mountains Hot Air Balloon Ride from Marrakech with Berber Breakfast and Desert Camel Experience
Everything was fun and high quality. Tour guides were very kind. Definitely worth it. However, the camel ride was a little disappointing. It was more an empty parking lot than a 'desert oasis'... If I'd known, I would have booked everything else and saved my money on the camel ride.

High Atlas Mountains and 5 Valleys Day Trip from Marrakech - All inclusive -
We had an amazing day with our guide Ismaël who learnt us a lot of the Marocaine way of life and history and the region ! He picked is up at 8.15 so we were first at the waterfall at the first valley. A lot of other organisations don’t make the whole trip of 5 valleys with lunch with the berber family ! It was super and we would do it again! 👌

Half Day Tour From Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains & Ourika Valley
Excellent tour from top to bottom. The hike is a little intense but not too bad. There was an older woman with me and she did it just fine. We took lots of breaks lol. You get more than your money’s worth. The food was fantastic too.

Atlas Mountains Hot Air Balloon Ride from Marrakech with Berber Breakfast and Desert Camel Experience
Have to start off by saying the tour guide was absolutely hilarious and made the experience all the more special. The ambiance is something that will live long in my mind. The best time to do the tour is the 6am pick up even if you're feeling sluggish. Being hoisted hundreds of feet into air will cure any lethargy. Some of the best picture opportunities of the trip.

When to Get There

For most travelers, the best time for a trip into the Atlas Mountains is March through November. While summers can be hot, temperatures in the Atlas Mountains are cooler than in the Moroccan lowlands. Mountain snow is usual from mid-January to mid-February, making this an excellent time for skiing in North Africa. Note that some businesses will be closed during Ramadan.

Highlights of the Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are dotted with interesting places to explore. Azzaden Valley is a quieter alternative to neighboring Imlil Valley and a popular base for guided treks. Dades Gorge, famous for growing Damascus roses, is a favorite destination for climbers, hikers, and white-water rafters. The rivers of the Middle Atlas feed the beautiful Ouzoud Falls, while Ifrane, the gateway town of the region, looks right out of the French Alps.
