Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Awesome and a great walk through history!
An awesome experience and David did a great job sharing his knowledge of the site. The entire tour is about three hours and we did the middle of the day one, which is really hot and sunny. Great views and guides historical illustration to accompany the visit really made the history come alive.

Colosseum Arena Floor Guided Tour and Ancient Rome Priority Access
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, engaging and passionate about the sites we were seeing. He shared his vast knowledge in a compelling and informative way, in the Forum and the Colosseum. He cared about ensuring we all saw the same thing and had time to experience the Arena floor.

Small-Group Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
The tour was great and tour guide was extremely knowledgeable providing an abundance of information about the colosseum, the underground and the forum. Being able to tour the underground portion of the colosseum was awesome. So much history and interesting facts about the elevator system, stage animals and gladiators. Ending the tour at the forum and palatial hill was great. I highly recommend the tour.

Colosseum and Roman Forum for Kids Private Tour
My family really enjoyed having a private skip the line tour of the colosseum and forum. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and patient with our kids. Romania when even over her time (can’t guarantee that for everyone) to show us sites and to point us to one of the best dining experiences I had in Roma. A place that had the best porchetta. I would definitely recommend.

Skip the Line: Colosseum Small Group Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
A decent but long tour. The colosseum portion of the tour was very short. The Roman Forum portion of the tour was very long. We did this tour at the end of June and it was extremely hot. There is little to no shade but plenty of water from the fountains if you have a bottle. The lines were not bad and we did skip the line for most sections of this tour.

Skip the Line: Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small-Group Walking Tour Including Pantheon and Piazza Navona
The guide gave a comprehensive tour explaining the colosseum and surrounding areas. It was a little tricky to find, but they were standing very near the metro stop under a tree. Lots of history to digest. So much to see!

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
